1. BALIEM VALLEY

Balliem Valley " Jaya wijaya Regency" is one of the highlights of Papua,an area which was only recently discovered by tourist. The Population in Baliem Valley is about 150.000 people. Altitude is 5.000 feet above sea level. The valley is 37 miles wide. the temperature at night can reach as low 7 and 25 degrees Celcius at daytime. this spectacular valley is home to the Dani tribe,who are Agricultors




2 Yali Tribe.

The yali tribe has a similiar way of life as the Dani people. The Yali on Hills and flat terrain. The temperature of this area is 20 - 30 degress celsius in the daytime and at night 10 - 1 degress celsius. The total population of this area 50.000 people. compared with dani,the Yali are more primitive. They also less influenced by outside world. The Largest villages around are Angguruk and Kosarek. Air Transportation to Angguruk or Kosarek is served by Chartered plane of Mission aviation Fellowship ( MAF)





3 ASMAT TRIBES

Asmat probably the most wellknown tribe in papua. They became famous not only through their headhunting practices in the past but also because of their wonderful art of wood. around 80.000 asmats live in the huge tidal swamp land of 10.000 square The climate is hot and humid. The most important subsistence food is sago flour. The Sago palm is also the source of very important ceremonial food,the larvae of the capircorn dreads of sago trees are cut down and people make holes in the trunks,so that the beetles will lay eggs in them. just before the celebrations the mature larvae are collected and eaten in great quantities out of specially carved wooden bowls. Beside this ceremony they also still have other ceremonies such as new canoe ceremony ,Mbis pole ceremony,etc
